52 WoC – Week 8

Hey, friends. I’m back again for week eight of our 52 Weeks of Contemplation. It’s been a busy couple of weeks but I knew I couldn’t miss this so today we’re getting right to it.

What hard things have gotten easier for you over time?

It’s snowing over here, so it could be something like becoming confident driving in the snow. Perhaps you’ve been learning to play an instrument or learning another language which is usually hard at first but over time gets easier. It could also be less tangible like setting boundaries for yourself or being willing to ask questions at work.

I can definitely relate to feeling more confident driving in bad weather as I’ve had more years of driving than when I was first driving and trying to figure things out. I learned to play the piano when I was younger and that was something I remember going from feeling it was too hard to playing for fun. I don’t practice any more so it would be a little hard to pick back up but I know I could if I wanted to.

For me, I’ve definitely had to work on things like setting boundaries for myself so I don’t overwork. Speaking up for myself at work has been something that’s taken years for me to feel comfortable doing. Another thing for me is asking for help. I’ve always been very independent and self sufficient so to finally feel comfortable asking for and receiving help has been a process for me.

I think the thing I’ve learned over time is that so much is hard at first but life becomes interesting when you step outside of what’s easy and comfortable for you. We all have our own experiences and perspectives that we shaped, or were shaped for us, as we grew up and I think part of being an adult is choosing to do hard things knowing that the reward once those hard things become easy is absolutely worth it.

So what was once hard for you that’s now easy or something you don’t think twice about? What are you working on now that feels hard but maybe is just new to you and will take time? Is there something hard you should be working on that you’ve put off?

As always, I’d love to hear what came up for you or what you’re going to work on going forward. If you feel comfortable dropping your thoughts in the comments I’d love to see it but it’s also good to take some time and just write things down for yourself. You never know where these moments of contemplation and reflection will take you over time.
