Welcome to 2023

It’s New Year’s Day and it’s snowing where I’m at. I wanted to drop a quick post to say that if you haven’t completed your goal setting or don’t yet know what you want to focus on in 2023 it’s totally ok.

New Year goal setting is completely arbitrary and doesn’t have to dictate how you create focus for your life.

Yeah, I said it. You can pick any random day in the year to start working on goals. You can use your birthday or another day that holds significance for you. New Years is easy in some ways as it starts/ends with the calendar year so you have a number of resources that are available and tailored for goal setting starting January 1. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Pick a time that works for you. Perhaps the holidays aren’t a time of rest and reflection because you’re dealing with kids who are out of their school routine, you’re managing family gatherings, or perhaps this is a time of year that isn’t a happy time for you.

I want you to have permission and the opportunity to sit down and reflect and set goals at whatever time works for you. Also, don’t feel you have to set SMART goals. That’s a great way to create focus when you’re first starting out if you’ve never worked towards goals before but sometimes having a word, a mantra, or other general focus can be enough. I’ve done both ways of working through the year with great results.

That being said, I will share that I’m not 100% ready to march into 2023 with goals in hand ready to conquer the world. I have some general goals that I’ll work towards like reading 50 books this year and doing more travel but I’ve been struggling to figure out what I want to work on beyond the big concepts of focusing on my purpose through contemplation, creation, and communication. I want to make connections and build community and I want to learn more about cars and things connected to yoga like chakras, astrology, and mudras.

I know this year I want to really focus on living life on purpose and for a purpose.

But that’s it. I don’t have specific things I want to do yet so I’m working through the exercises in the book Creative Hustle by Olatunde Sobomehin and sam seidel. It will be interesting to see if this helps bring clarity to what I want to work on but I’m also reminding myself that things happen in good time and just because I don’t have clearly defined goals on day one doesn’t mean it’s time to give up.

I’m going to continue to reflect and refine and as I figure things out I’ll share them here. If you’ve got your goals or direction set I’d love to hear what you’re focusing on. Feel free to share them in the comments.
