52 WoC – Week 11 – Career Discovery

Ok so we’re catching up for missing last week and being late this week so you’re getting a couple posts off the regular timeline but hopefully starting next week I’ll be back on track to post Wednesday mornings.

So, career discovery… I truly believe these questions can be so powerful in helping you understand what your current career needs are and how you can best achieve them. I’ve run through these questions and found I could be happy where I was with a few small changes and advocated for those. Other times, I’ve found the questions have confirmed my sense it was time to move on. Either way, it’s information to help you make an informed decision instead of one based purely on emotions or fear.

Our question for today is about understanding the things that might motivate you or that make you happy. The things that would be worth fighting for in your life.

What am I passionate about, what makes time fly by, what brings me joy, what impact do I want to have, what makes me curious?

When you think about these questions throw everything out on paper. It’s not about censoring yourself because there’s no possible way you could make a living teaching yoga or you don’t see a connection between work and your car hobby.

Sometimes you’ll find clear connections to where your passions and work could align but other times it’s just good to know what interests you, what makes you curious, and what impact you want to have on this world. Not all jobs have to be the answer to integrating these insights into your life. Through these questions, you may find that you want to maximize your time teaching yoga so in your job search you may choose to prioritize flexibility over a job title or you may look for opportunities where the company culture promotes wellness where you might even be able to teach while on work time. Other times, there may be no connection and you know your job may be a means to funding your hobbies or donating to causes that matter to you. Those are all ok.

So, what lights you up? What brings you joy? Even if it’s simple don’t let that stop you from writing it down. It’s also interesting to look back over time and see what may have been really important to you at one point in your life is no longer important to you the next time you stop to reflect.

I’d love to hear your answers to these questions if you’d like to share. Otherwise, take some time for yourself and write things down. Remember, we’ll be doing some additional reflection at the end that will bring together all the work answering these questions so you’ll want to make sure you can look at your answers to all the questions at the end.
