We’ve talked about getting a dog for a while and I’ve mostly resisted the idea because I don’t feel I have enough time to dedicate to caring for a dog on top of work, kids, and the tiny sliver of time I get for my own pursuits (hello some time for yoga, writing, and reading is always nice).
I get that I wouldn’t be the only one taking care of another pet (we already have a cat) but I also wanted to be realistic that if things got busy I would need to make time for walks and letting the dog out which knowing I could barely make exercise time for me and sometimes I’m in hours of back to back meetings seemed cruel for a living creature.
Fast forward to when husband started looking seriously at getting a dog and we found he’d be losing his job as part of a re-org, we figured he’d have an excess of time to do things like puppy training, letting the dog out throughout the day, and making sure the dog didn’t decide the cat was it’s new chew toy.
So, we committed to a puppy from a German Shepherd litter in Vernal, UT. We took a trip out to meet the puppies when they were about 5 weeks old as I couldn’t imagine picking a puppy based on pictures and without meeting them.
The kids fell in love with the “pink” puppy. (The puppies were referred to by the color of their collar to be able to identify them easily.) She was described as very friendly, pretty mellow, and loving people and we found it all to be true. We decided she would be the one to become a part of our family.
Be prepared for random puppy updates and cute pictures. We finally brought her home today and after a short time wondering how her and the cat would get along things have settled back down. She is used to being outside so we’ll see how she adjusts to being in the house. Overall though, she seems to be enjoying being a part of the family and we’re delighted to have her here.
